The 2011 edition marks an important shift for Paris Photo, with a new venue at the Grand Palais and Julien Frydman as its new Director.
The arrival of Paris Photo at the Grand Palais at last offers this perpetual movement its full scope and enables it to present all the wealth and vitality of historical and contemporary photographic creation in what really is an exceptional environment.
With a selection of 135 exhibitors (galleries and publishers), with 65% of the galleries from overseas, 23 countries represented and 55 new participants, this anniversary edition grants a prominent place to renewal and discovery.
For its 15th edition, from 10 to 13 November, Paris Photo gives pride of place to African photography from Bamako to Cape Town and proposes a complete panorama of this scene: a powerful presence of the continent’s artists (44 representatives) with a number of South African galleries and an exhibition of the works of 12 young emerging photographers, organized by the Rencontres de Bamako.
In addition to the presentation of works by African photographers from the Walther Collection, Paris Photo 2011 welcomes the participation of numerous artists from the continent and their galleries, whether based in Africa or elsewhere. The special exhibition this year, entitled “African Emerging Photography”, will introduce visitors to the newest generation of African photographic artists.
Again this year, Paris Photo aims to welcome the participation of over thirty cultural institutions, organisations and patrons. The Association pour la Diffusion Internationale de l’Art Français (ADIAF), La Maison Rouge, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Metz, the Photographer’s Gallery and the Tate in London, the International Center of Photography (ICP) and the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (MAMCO) in Geneva and the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne have announced their presence at Paris Photo 2011.
As with the previous years, the selection committee, made of eight international galleries, will guarantee the quality of the galleries and works exhibited, offering a unique panorama of
nineteenth-century, modern and contemporary photography.
