One of the oldest and most prestigious photojournalism awards in the world has selected winners for the 67th annual Pictures of the Year International (POYi) for exhibit, featuring 60 winning images, plus hundreds more available digitally, at the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, June 26-October 10.
The exhibit, titled THE YEAR, conveys notable events of 2009, including the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, the economic crisis, environmental disasters, pop culture, soldiers' stories, animal extinction, healthcare, and more.
First-place winners in the show are Paul Hansen, the Photographer of the Year in the Newspaper category, Thomas Lekfeldt, winner of the World Understanding Award, Tomas van Houtryve, Photographer of the Year in the Freelance/Agency category, Preston Gannaway winner of the "One Week's Work" Award, and Marcus Bleasdale, winner of the Best Photography Book Award.
The digital exhibit features a series by Barbara Davidson's images of Native American life and work by Brian L. Frank capturing the disastrous effects of pollution on the Colorado River.
POYi, part of the Missouri School of Journalism, includes an educational program with lectures by the winning photojournalists through the duration of the exhibit. Admission is free.
