The Sundance Award-winning film Fuel, which examines the influence of the oil industry in people's lives, premieres in Canada on July 2, following a weeklong environmental awareness campaign.
June 23 marked the two month anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion which led to the worst environmental disaster in American history; according to PBS an estimated 1,470,000 gallons of oil a day have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico since the initial explosion.
To mark this occasion, and following the release of his Sundance Award winning documentary Fuel, filmmaker and environmental activist Josh Tickell has announced he will begin a weeklong environmental awareness campaign. The campaign, involving activists, politicians and scientists, takes place across New Orleans and Los Angeles in a bid to elevate environmental awareness and seek solutions to the oil spill. The campaign culminates on July 2 with the Canadian premiere of Fuel in Toronto.
Fuel, which is available to buy from iTunes, Amazon and Cinema Libre stores, focuses on the oil industry's influence on a region of Louisiana known as 'Cancer Alley'. Baton Rouge or Cancer Alley has the highest rate of cancer in the United States, due to chemical byproducts from nearby oil refineries. The film also investigates a widely underreported oil spill that occurred shortly after hurricane Katrina and examines the political context in which the Deepwater Horizon disaster occurred. On his blog, Tickell has publicly invited BP and its affiliates to a screening of Fuel in New Orleans on Saturday, June 26.
