Japanese government has announced the opening of the fourth runway and new facilities at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.
The new runway will come into service on October 21, and will start operating international flights on October 31, including flights to and from the United States and Europe.
At present, Haneda is mainly a domestic airport, with international flights limited to four cities in China and South Korea.
Enabling 32 new international flights will be very popular amongst travelers and airlines because of Haneda airport’s strategic location close to downtown Tokyo. Today international travelers are primarily routed through Narita Airport, which is 60 km east of the Japanese capital, and there is a lack of a high-speed surface transport link to the city.
From October 31, JAL plans to start flying from Haneda to San Francisco, Honolulu, Paris, Bangkok and Taipei.
Delta will fly from Haneda to Los Angeles and Detroit; American is adding a new New York service and Hawaiian will have twice-daily services to Honolulu. - CF
