The Fondation Maeght at Saint Paul de Vence is presenting a retrospective of the work of Alberto Giacometti, Giacometti & Maeght 1946-1966. The Foundation is currently showig some of the artist's best-known masterpieces, including the bronze sculptures L'Homme qui marche (Walking Man), Le Chien (Dog) and Le Chat (Cat). The exhibition includes 90 major works of 60 bronzes, 10 plaster casts and 20 paintings on loan from the Foundation's collections and those of the Maeght family, together with others on loan from international public and private collections.
The Fondation Maeght owns one of the most exhaustive collections of sculptures by Alberto Giacometti including two versions of Walking Man. Althought his paintings are relatively few and less well-known, they have been given a prominent place in the exhibition, in particular his portraits of Aimé Maeght and Marguerite Maeght, all three versions of which will be shown together for the first time.
The exhibition also includes 80 drawings, some extremely rare painted plaster sculptures, plus etchings and letters highlighting the friendship that existed between Alberto Giacometti and Aimé Maeght from their very first meeting in 1946.
A true museum in nature, the Maeght Foundation is an exceptional site that contains one of the most important collections in Europe, with paintings, sculptures; drawings and graphic works of modern art from the 20th century (Bonnard, Braque, Calder,
Chagall, Chillida, Giacometti, Léger, Miró...) and contemporary artists (Adami, Kelly, Kuroda, Monory, Tàpies). More than 200 000 visitors come each year to the Maeght Foundation, which has put on over 100 monographic or thematic exhibitions since its opening.
